Welcome to Athelstan School Website

It is with great pride and excitement that I welcome you to our school. Pride in a school which truly lives up to its motto ‘to be the best that we can be’ and excitement that Athelstan is moving into a period of rapid growth and development. Athelstan is an exciting, innovative and successful school where children learn, grow and achieve in preparation for living in the twenty first century. As a staff we are committed to providing the highest standard of education for every pupil. Our school is a place where children really matter and every individual’s ability is recognised, nurtured, developed and celebrated.

The school is a long time recipient of the Arts Council of Great Britain’s Arts Mark Gold Award, and we hold an enviable record for our success in the arts (art, music, drama and dance) for the last three years all our Y6 children have left Athelstan holding Arts Mark Awards- the equivalent to a GCSE award.

The school holds many other national awards in recognition for the high level of achievement we continue to demonstrate in basic skills, ecology, science and most recently sport.

Athelstan is entering an exciting phase with a multimillion pound extension and redevelopment, by September 2017, when the work is due for completion; the school’s grounds will have doubled in size, there will be several new classrooms and all our rooms in school will be completely upgraded- including a bigger hall and library.

By Autumn 2016 we will be in a position to expand our age range to include provision for two year old children, with separate designated rooms and outside areas for three and four year olds.

The school also boasts a well-developed wildlife learning area which enables children of all ages to have a practical investigative approach to learning outdoors. As a school we believe that it is essential that we offer a wide range of experiences to our children both in and out of the classroom. We recognise that school isn’t just about the formal lessons taught in class but about developing the child as a rounded individual.

We are also pleased to be part of the STAR (Sherburn, Tadcaster and Rural) Alliance working in partnership with fourteen other primary schools and both Tadcaster and Sherburn secondary schools, to develop shared opportunities and challenges for all the schools.

We hope you find all the information you require about our school from the web site, but we also hope that you will be able to come and visit Athelstan in order to experience for yourself the truly special atmosphere, caring ethos and great pride in which we hold our fantastic school.
