Welcome to Athelstan Community Primary School

In Year 4/5, as part of our topic launch, we created Mayan Masks inspired by the ancient Mayans. We examined the masks and learnt that the masks were used for a number of reasons. Firstly, they were used to intimidate their enemies and on their masks there were designs of snakes and other dangerous animals. We used our designing skills to create respresentations of the snake on our masks.
The masks were also used to celebrate ceremonies and festivals, we gathered ideas of what colours would be the most eye-catching and dynamic.

The Mayans worshipped a God called Kukulan, who was known as the 'feathered serpant'. He was the God of chocolate and knowledge.

Have a look below at our fantastic designs.
