Curriculum Enrichment

Learning outside the classroom provides enrichment in the curriculum .Every young person should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development, whatever their age, ability or circumstances.Learning beyond the classroom is the use of places other than the classroom for teaching and learning. It is about getting children and young people out and about, providing them with challenging, exciting and different experiences to help them learn. It is about raising achievement through an organised, powerful approach to learning in which direct experience is of prime importance. This is not only about what we learn but importantly how and where we learn. It is not an end in itself but rather a vehicle to develop the capacity to learn. Good quality learning beyond the classroom adds much value to .

Athelstan School pupils take part in a number of exciting visits each term. Teaching staff work hard to ensure that practical experiences enhance the work children do in the classroom. In line with the school's learning beyond the classroom ethos we are able to participate in a variety of events and activites . The children in Year 5 and 6 also participate in a residential visit which is held every two years for our year 5 and 6 pupils.

Some of the key experiences for any child, not just at Athelstan, are residential visits. At Athelstan, the Year 6 residential to Kingswood at Colomendy in Wales is a significant milestone in the childrens' educational journey. Every September, Year 6 are given the opportunity to visit the Kingswood centre in North Wales for five days of action packed adventure. The children are kept busy from early morning until late in the evening taking part in activities such as climbing, caving, abseiling, quad biking, archery and zip wire.

The children have a brilliant time experiencing extra-curricular activities in a safe environment.
