Athelstan School Turf Cutting 12 Sept 2016 002

As a result of local housing developments and a population increase there has been a rapid rise in the number of school places needed in Sherburn in Elmet. Redrow ,Persimmon and Panache Homes  are building houses within the schools' catchment area. To accommodate new families from this housing development Athelstan School will undergo whole school expansion supported by NYCC Strategic Services. The expansion will be carried out in two phases and will see the school rise to a two form entry school from September 2017.The expansion programme will also include the provision of 2 Year old Early Years places from September 2016.

We are really excited to see the aerial photographs of the building work so far. The Sewells team are working very hard and we are looking forward to seeing our new school.

Athelstan School Council pupils took part in a steel signing event with Sewells Construction. The children were escorted onto the site by Mrs Thompson (School Business Manager and Mrs Barton, Inclusion Manager ) They met with Paul Armitage Construction Site Manager and Mark Dodgson ,Construction Project Manager who spoke to the councillors about the progress of the work being undertaken to extend their school.

The children were very excited to find out what has been happening behind the construction hoarding and were amazed by the work and the size of the new school. All the children were dressed in  protective clothing and signed their names on the steel frame of the building.

"It was very interesting and I can now see what it will look like in September" Lucas Culkin Y2. "We met some builders who showed us around the buidling site and they were very friendly" ,Amelie Webster Y2

"Signing the steel means I am part of this school forever",Jonathan Eldridge Y5

Sewells Construction have been very helpful and it is lovely to include the children in the progress of the project. It is their school and for them to see the progress was very exciting. Mrs Sue Thompson (School Business Manager  )

Sewell Construction have been working very hard since they started in September. The preparations for our return after the October holidays saw some minor internal works and the building of the tempoary playgound (Muga). Foundations for the new school have been laid and we can now see the steel structure being installed. Please see the Sewells update below for more details.

Athelstan School in partnership with NYCC strategic planning and development team is moving into Phase 2 of the expansion and redevelopment programme. From September 2016 Sewell Construction will start the works which will take our school forward to create a large, modern primary school, purpose built for the curriculum of the 21st century.

NYCC and Sewell construction will undertake the project which is scheduled for completion in autumn 2017.

The first phase of the whole school expansion will start on February 8th 2016  and is expected to be completed before September 2016.Phase One work involves the building of the purpose built 2 and 3 year old Early Years facility and the extension of the main school hall. NYCC has awarded the contract for the works to William Birch and Sons Ltd (York based company). Plans can found by clicking the links at the bottom of this article.

This is a very exciting time for us at Athelstan School as from September 2016 the school will lower its age range to admit children from aged 2. The school and governors have been working with the local authority to help create high quality 2 year old places within the community.
