award eco schools

Athelstan Community Primary School has been awarded the Green Flag award for its commitment to the environment.

The award is recognition of the schools on going commitment to the environment and to the ethos of Eco Schools. Miss O’Donnell head teacher is delighted with the achievement and recognition of the hard work by both staff and pupils. Mrs Barton the schools science coordinator has worked with the children to gain the award which has helped develop many projects within school. The children have a greater understanding of recycling, energy saving, wastage, planting and growing and care for the environment. The Eco Schools Assessors Comments about the school were:

"The main strength the school has is the enthusiasm and commitment of the students; this was more than evident during my visit. It was apparent the enthusiasm of the students wasn't about obtaining the Green Flag, it was about being actively involved in the many projects this school has taken part in. The adult involvement from Mrs Barton, Mrs Clayton and Mrs Thompson has been a key factor in empowering the children to be instrumental in the work towards the Green Flag Award."

The school is currently working on a renewal project to continue to maintain its Green Flag status. Partnership and support with other local schools will help us with our application for Ambassador status in the very near future
