To end our Topic, Amazing Spaces and Places in the UK, all four Milestone 1 classes worked together to create London in a shoebox. They discussed various London landmarks and looked at maps before creating their own features to fit inside their box.

Year 1 enjoyed performing The Wriggly Nativity. Thank you for coming to watch and for those of you that provided costumes. The children did an amazing job.

Year 1 loved The Selfish Giant pantomime!

In DT we have been making a  new handbag for the queen. We started by investigating lots of different types of bags before moving on to designing our own. We thought about the colours, pattern and shape of bag the queen might like. Year 1 have worked very hard, practicing a running a stitch and joining their bags together using their sewing skills.

In Science Year 1 have been learning about different types of animals. They investigated the features of amphibians and reptiles before making their own animals out of clay. The children used various tools to create texture in the clay as well as match sticks for joining clay parts together.

We have had a busy and interesting week taking our learning into the orchard. In maths, we used natural objects to solve addition number sentences and composed number stories to accompany the calculations. We have completed art based activities using natural objects to collage pictures and patterns and made leaf lanterns by threading leaves onto wool. They look beautiful hung in the classrooms. We also made a stick person using natural objects which we then wrote descriptions of, trying to use adjectives to make our descriptions interesting.

In maths this term we have been learning about place value, addition and subtraction. We have completed lots of practical activities to help us. We are becoming more familiar with numicon and how this brilliant resource can help us with lots of different number tasks.

We have been busy in the computer suite. We have learnt how to log on to the computer and how to access different programs. It was tricky using the correct username and password, but after lots of perseverance and determination we all succeeded in logging into active learn and completing maths games and reading books.

We have been looking at maps of the UK and London. We have labelled maps with the names of countries, as well as Sherburn and London. We have also been marking different London landmarks onto a map of London and learnt that the huge river flowing through London is called the River Thames.

We enjoy accessing the provision areas in Year One and completing the set challenges or challenging ourselves to learn something new and do something different. We have had great fun making things to wear, designing and building modes of transport to travel around Sherburn, creating treasure maps, working on our maths and English skills on the IPads and lots more.

We all took part in the school's sponsored walk and walked over a mile around the school grounds! We had a well-earned drink and rest afterwards!

This term, we have really enjoyed working and learning in our outdoor area.

We discovered a blue hat in the Year One outdoor playground. It didn't seem to belong to anyone...but then we saw a missing poster for a lost blue hat with a red ribbon - an identical description of the hat we had found! In class we had great fun trying to guess who the hat may belong to, giving reasons. The teachers rang the phone number on the poster and learnt that the hat belong to the Queen from the story The Queen's Hat and it had blown away!
